NAROK, Kenya — Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Eliud Lagat has officially declared a strict dusk-to-dawn curfew in Trans Mara South and West, Narok County. The move comes in response to a surge in tribal clashes that have left several dead and thousands displaced.

Speaking on Saturday, DIG Lagat designated the two regions as “disturbed areas,” confirming that a high-level security operation is currently underway to restore order.

The curfew, which begins daily at 6:00 PM, is intended to facilitate the containment of armed groups and prevent further loss of life.

Displacement and humanitarian crisis

The security intervention follows a harrowing report from the Kenya Red Cross, which indicated that ethnic fighting in the Angata Barikkoi area has displaced over 1,800 people in just three days.

The conflict, primarily involving the Maasai and Kipsigis communities, has escalated into the systematic destruction of property and the torching of residential homes.

On Friday, DIG Lagat issued a stern warning to political leaders and private financiers suspected of fueling the violence.

Areas under curfew

The curfew affects a broad range of settlements across the two sub-counties. Residents are expected to remain indoors from 6:00 PM until dawn.

In a decisive effort to disarm the warring factions, DIG Lagat issued a final warning to individuals in possession of unlicensed weapons.

Lagat further instructed all criminals with illegal guns have been given 72 hours to surrender the weapons lest appropriate action be taken.

He urged both communities to prioritize peaceful coexistence and cautioned that the government would not hesitate to take “appropriate action” against those found inciting or financing the unrest.
