5.1-magnitude earthquake strikes eastern Taiwan, epicentre near Hualien city
A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck off the coast of eastern Taiwan's Hualien County at 7:32 p.m. Thursday, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).

TAIPEI, Taiwan — A moderate earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 struck off the eastern coast of Taiwan on Thursday, December 18, 2025. The tremor, which originated near the seismically active Hualien region, was powerful enough to cause buildings in the capital, Taipei, to sway briefly, though no immediate casualties or structural failures have been reported.

According to seismic monitoring data, the quake’s epicenter was located approximately 18 km from Hualien City, occurring at a relatively shallow depth of 31.6 km.

Following the tremor, the Hualien Fire Department immediately deployed rapid-response teams to conduct safety inspections across the district.

While the shaking caused concern in urban areas, the department’s initial assessment provided a measure of relief for the public.

  • Status of casualties: In an initial statement, the department noted that no casualties had been reported yet.
  • Infrastructure check: Specialized teams continue to monitor critical infrastructure, including mountain roads and older residential buildings, for signs of secondary damage.

A surge in seismic activity

This latest event is part of an ongoing period of heightened seismic activity for the island. Taiwan is situated at the complex junction of two major tectonic plates, making it one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the world.

The island has been under constant geological stress throughout December. While this 5.1 magnitude event was moderate, it follows a massive 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Hualien earlier this month, which has since triggered hundreds of aftershocks.

Historical perspective: Taiwan’s major earthquakes

The frequency of these events serves as a constant reminder of the island’s volatile geography. Over the last few decades, Taiwan has faced several catastrophic events:

YearLocationMagnitudeImpact
1999Jiji (Central Taiwan)7.3Over 2,000 fatalities
2016Southern Taiwan6.4Over 100 fatalities
2024Hualien (April)7.2Significant infrastructure damage
2025Hualien (Dec 18)5.1No immediate damage reported

The April swarm

Earlier in 2025, the region experienced an extraordinary “seismic swarm” during the month of April. Records show the island was rattled by at least 80 earthquakes in that month alone.

That sequence began with a 5.5 magnitude tremor felt in Taipei and was followed by a relentless series of aftershocks, including two intense tremors that struck in quick succession during the early morning hours.

As monitoring continues, residents in eastern Taiwan are advised to remain vigilant, as aftershocks are common following quakes of this magnitude in the Hualien area.
