UPDF soldier killed after minister’s convoy hit in head-on crash on Kampala–Gulu Highway
The wreckage of vehicles involved in a fatal accident that claimed the life of a UPDF soldier and left several others seriously injured in Kalule Village, Nyimbwa Sub-County, along the Kampala–Gulu Highway on December 7, 2025.

LUWEERO, Uganda — A Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) soldier, part of the escort team for the Minister of State for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Huda Olele, died instantly on Sunday evening following a head-on collision on the Kampala–Gulu Highway. The fatal accident occurred in Kalule Village, Nyimbwa Sub-County.

The crash resulted in serious injuries to several other UPDF soldiers who were traveling in the same convoy.

According to police reports, the incident took place at approximately 7:45 pm. Authorities stated that a white Fuso Fighter truck (registration UAN 394Z), which was moving from Kampala towards Luwero District, attempted a reckless overtaking maneuver near Kalule Trading Centre.

ASP Sam Twiineamazima, the Regional Police Spokesperson for Savannah Region, confirmed that the Fuso truck crashed head-on into an oncoming green Toyota Hilux (registration UG 0388D), which was part of the Minister’s convoy and was driving toward Kampala.

The deceased soldier was identified as LCPL Moses Edongoto. ASP Twiineamazima further detailed the casualties: six other army officers and two civilians sustained serious injuries and were immediately transported to Bombo General Military Hospital for urgent medical care.

Preliminary findings by the Police Spokesperson pointed to “reckless overtaking by the Fuso truck driver” as the primary cause of the fatal crash. Both vehicles involved in the collision have been towed to Bombo Police Station as investigations into the incident remain ongoing.

The tragic event highlights the severity of road safety issues in Uganda, which, according to the 2024 annual police crime report, records an average of about 25 deaths daily from road crashes and murders.
