NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has officially marked his return to frontline politics by registering a new political vehicle, the National Economic Development Party (NEDP), in preparation for the 2027 General Election.
On Tuesday, the Ex-Governor received the certificate of full registration from the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP).
Speaking moments after securing the document, Mike Sonko outlined ambitious goals for the outfit, positioning it as a central player in the country’s future governance landscape.
“This is the party to watch. We are building a movement that will help form the next government. Our foundation is economic transformation, development, and improving the livelihoods of Kenyans,” Sonko declared.
He characterized the NEDP as a platform for national renewal, extending an invitation to citizens across demographic and political divides.
“We welcome everyone—from Gen Z to elders, from all political backgrounds—anyone who believes in changing our country. Let us join hands and work together,” he added.
Renewed battle with the judiciary
Alongside his political comeback, Sonko revived his long-standing grievances against Chief Justice Martha Koome and the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
He accused the Chief Justice of bias during the handling of his impeachment appeal and criticized the JSC for an “inexplicable silence” regarding a petition for her removal that he filed more than three years ago in July 2022.
Sonko alleged that the Chief Justice made “premeditated” remarks about his impeachment before the case was heard by the Supreme Court, arguing that such conduct compromised judicial impartiality.
“A leader can only be locked out after exhausting all avenues of appeal. The Supreme Court rushed my case, and the East African Court of Justice has now confirmed that my impeachment was unfair,” he said.

He further questioned the administrative delay in processing his complaints against the head of the judiciary.
“How can a matter stay for over three years without a single communication? Kenyans deserve fairness, even from the highest judicial offices,” he stated.
EACJ ruling bolsters legal push
Sonko’s renewed agitation follows a recent ruling by the East African Court of Justice (EACJ). The regional court found that his impeachment process violated the principles of fairness, justice, and due process.

The court specifically faulted the Supreme Court for procedural irregularities, including denying Sonko adequate time to file submissions, a move that effectively barred him from contesting the 2022 Mombasa gubernatorial election.
While the EACJ did not overturn the impeachment, it noted that the process inflicted “irreparable harm” on Sonko’s political career. Buoyed by these findings, Sonko confirmed he is reviewing his legal options to reclaim his standing.
“With the EACJ judgment now on record, I will pursue justice to the very end. My rights were violated, and I’m seeking a review because the truth is finally coming out,” he said.
