Meta integrates real-time global news into its AI assistant

CALIFORNIA, United States — In a significant strategic shift, Meta announced on Friday that it is integrating real-time content from major global news organizations into its Artificial Intelligence (AI) assistant.

This update aims to provide billions of users across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp with immediate access to breaking news, entertainment, and lifestyle updates.

The social media giant revealed that Meta AI will now draw from a wide array of partnerships to answer news-related queries.

The initial roster includes a mix of mainstream, international, and conservative-leaning outlets such as CNN, Fox News, Le Monde, People, USA Today, The Daily Caller, and The Washington Examiner.

Enhancing AI accuracy

According to a company blog post, the feature is designed to allow users to access “more diverse content sources” and will provide direct citation links to partner websites for those wishing to dive deeper into specific stories.

Meta explained that this expansion is critical for making its AI assistant “more responsive, accurate, and balanced” by incorporating a variety of viewpoints.

The company candidly acknowledged the limitations of existing technology, noting that “real-time events can be challenging for current AI systems to keep up with.”

This announcement marks a notable reversal for the company founded by Mark Zuckerberg. In recent years, Meta has had a volatile relationship with the news industry, previously declaring that news constituted a very small share of user engagement.

This led to the shutdown of the Facebook News tab in major markets like the United States, Britain, and France, effectively ending multi-million dollar deals with leading publishers.

Furthermore, the new partnerships come just months after Zuckerberg made the surprise decision in January to axe Meta’s US fact-checking program, which employed third-party organizations, including AFP, to expose misinformation, a move widely interpreted as aligning more closely with the Trump administration’s antipathy toward establishment news.

The AI arms race

Meta’s move to reintegrate news is driven by intensifying competition in the generative AI sector.

Rivals such as ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini are increasingly moving to incorporate live web content and real-time news feeds into their models.

Meta stated that it plans to continue adding partnerships and developing new features to remain competitive in the evolving landscape of AI assistants.
