NAIROBI, Kenya — Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has officially confirmed the removal of Kakamega Senator Dr. Boni Khalwale from the powerful position of Senate Majority Chief Whip.

The decision follows a formal resolution by the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party to reorganize its House leadership.

In an official communication delivered to the Senate on Tuesday, Speaker Kingi acknowledged receipt of minutes from a UDA party meeting held on December 2, 2025, which sanctioned Khalwale’s dismissal.

Wakoli takes the reins

The Speaker confirmed that the ruling party has adhered to the legal thresholds required to effect the change. Consequently, Bungoma Senator David Wakoli Wafula has been appointed to replace Khalwale immediately.

Reading the official communication, Kingi stated:

“From the correspondence, the Minutes indicate a resolution to remove the Senate Majority Whip, Sen. (Dr.) Boni Khalwale, CBS, MP, in accordance with Standing Order 22(5). Consequently, the Majority Party elected Sen. David Wafula Wakoli, MP, in his place.”

A deepening rift

The ouster marks the culmination of months of strained relations between the outspoken Kakamega Senator and the UDA hierarchy.

The friction largely stems from Khalwale’s controversial decision to back rival candidate Seth Panyako (DAP-K) for the Malava parliamentary seat, openly defying the party’s endorsement of David Ndakwa.

Despite mounting pressure, Khalwale maintained a defiant stance, claiming he faced intimidation and threats from party officials and daring them to strip him of the Whip position.

Matters escalated on November 26, 2025, when the Senator alleged that the state had withdrawn his bodyguards due to his political differences with the party leadership.

“My security details have been pulled without any warning or explanation,” Khalwale claimed at the time.
