VIHIGA COUNTY, Kenya — Kisa East Ward made political history on Thursday after electing Aduda Okwiri of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) as its new Member of County Assembly (MCA). This marks the party’s first-ever elective victory since its unveiling earlier this year.
The by-election was necessitated by the tragic death of the former MCA, Stephen Maloba, who was stabbed during a political rally in 2023.
For many residents, the poll represented not only a political mandate but also a symbolic opportunity for healing and a fresh start following the loss.
Dominant results in a multi-party race
Across all 24 polling stations, the contest drew fierce competition, but Aduda Okwiri secured a dominant win with a total of 1,952 votes.
Okwiri emerged far ahead of his numerous rivals, defeating his closest challenger, Joel Ongoro of the Movement for Democracy and Growth (MDG), who garnered 1,541 votes.

A Milestone for the young party
The decisive victory was met with jubilation among DCP supporters and party leadership, including Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala.

Supporters described the win as a major milestone for the young party and a clear sign of shifting political dynamics within Kakamega County.
Residents of Kisa East Ward expressed strong hope that the new MCA will honor the memory of the late Maloba by championing peace, development, and unity across the constituency.
