NAIROBI, Kenya — In a display of maturity that has silenced days of online speculation, Pastor Victor Kanyari has confirmed that he will not be seeking immediate custody of his biological children with the late gospel singer Betty Bayo, instead allowing them to remain with her widower, Hiram “Tash” Gitau.
The future of the children had been a subject of intense public debate following the singer’s passing, with fans questioning who would assume guardianship.
However, speaking during a service at his Nairobi church on Sunday, November 23, 2025, Kanyari cleared the air, revealing that the two men had reached a peaceful understanding centered on compassion.
A decision rooted in empathy
Kanyari explained that his decision was driven by a recognition of Tash’s profound grief. He noted that separating the children from their stepfather at this vulnerability moment would be cruel.
“He’s mourning,” Kanyari said, “and right now, the children are one of the few sources of comfort for him.”
The controversial preacher emphasized that he had no intention of waging a custody battle during such a difficult time. His goal, he stated, is to remain “a good person”, avoiding unnecessary conflict when the family is already in pain.

Kanyari revealed that he and Tash engaged in honest conversations regarding the children’s welfare during the funeral planning process.
He recalled that whenever the grieving widower asked, “What about the children?” he would offer reassurance: “Let them stay with you.”
According to Kanyari, their shared priority throughout the mourning period was simply to give Betty a dignified farewell.
Proof of fatherhood
The pastor also took the opportunity to address social media critics who have questioned his involvement in his children’s lives.
To counter the narrative of absenteeism, Kanyari shared screenshots of past WhatsApp conversations with the late singer and his children, detailing his contributions to school fees, uniforms, and medical expenses like braces.
In one poignant exchange from October 2023, his daughter, Sky, thanked him for supporting her education, calling him “the best” father she could ask for.

Another message showed her updating him on her midterm break plans to visit him—evidence, Kanyari argued, that he has always been present.
Public reaction and future plans
The truce between the two men has been met with praise from Kenyans online, who commended them for prioritizing the children’s mental well-being over ego.
Many highlighted Tash’s quiet strength during the funeral and applauded Kanyari for his unexpected grace.
While the children will reside with Tash for the foreseeable future to help him navigate his grief, Kanyari maintained that he does not intend to be a distant father.
He affirmed his commitment to remaining a constant, supportive presence in their lives as they all adjust to a future without Betty.
