KIAMBU, Kenya — Grief has engulfed a village in Limuru, Kiambu County, following the tragic death of a nine-year-old girl who was killed in a house fire overnight.
The victim, a pupil at Rironi Primary School, was asleep in her family’s house on Friday night, October 24, when the blaze broke out under circumstances that remain unclear.
The devastating incident occurred while her parents were away attending a funeral, according to police reports.
Limuru Directorate of Criminal Investigations Officer (DCIO) Peter Alenga confirmed the details, stating that his office has launched a full inquiry into the tragedy.

The DCIO emphasized the investigative process, but also issued a strong caution to the public regarding child safety: “Alenga says investigations into the cause of the fire have commenced, urging parents to be cautious during the holiday season.”
Rescue efforts hampered by water shortages
Eyewitness accounts from residents who rushed to the scene indicated that immediate efforts to save the child were severely hampered.

According to the neighbours, an acute water shortage currently gripping the area prevented them from bringing the fire under control quickly.

Furthermore, residents voiced strong criticism over the emergency response, blaming the Kiambu County fire brigade department for a delayed arrival.
The body of the deceased minor has been recovered as police continue their investigation to determine the exact cause of the fatal inferno.
