The podcast takeover: Why radio is losing young audiences
The rise of podcasting: How digital audio Is revolutionising journalism

NAIROBI, Kenya — For decades, traditional radio served as the primary medium for music, news, and entertainment, defining daily routines from breakfast to bedtime. However, over the past ten years, podcasts have quietly surpassed radio in popularity, particularly among younger audiences, reflecting profound changes in consumer habits and the evolution of technology.

Younger listeners have been raised in an on-demand culture where instant downloads, social media, and streaming platforms dictate content consumption.

This has made the convenience and flexibility offered by podcasts a decisive advantage over conventional broadcasts.

When and how did podcasts become popular?

Podcasting, a portmanteau combining “iPod” and “broadcast,” has its origins in the early 2000s, with the term itself being coined in 2004. However, the medium’s transition from a niche activity to a mainstream phenomenon required a confluence of technological advancements, namely the rapid spread of smartphones and increasingly affordable recording equipment, which democratized content creation.

The trend experienced its most significant surge in popularity during the mid-2010s, catalyzed by the explosive success of the investigative journalism podcast, “Serial,” in 2014.

Hosted by journalist Sarah Koenig, “Serial” captivated millions of listeners worldwide with its real-time, gripping investigation into the 1999 murder of Hae Min Lee and the subsequent conviction of Adnan Syed. The groundbreaking podcast not only brought international attention to the case through an audio-only format—ultimately leading to Syed’s release from prison—but also pioneered a new genre of true crime entertainment and investigative journalism.

The success of “Serial” sparked renewed public interest in criminal justice reform and cold cases, firmly establishing podcasting as a powerful, mainstream audio medium for news, education, and entertainment that has continued to rapidly gain popularity ever since.

Convenience and customization drive the shift

Unlike radio, which mandates tuning in at a specific broadcast time, podcasts are accessible anytime and anywhere, perfectly integrating into busy, modern lifestyles. Whether a person is commuting, exercising, or relaxing, a podcast is readily available with a simple tap.

The limitless variation and flexibility of podcasts further solidify their appeal. While radio stations often adhere to general talk shows or specific music genres, the podcast landscape covers an immense range of topics—from true crime and comedy to niche hobbies and mental health.

For a generation that values diverse perspectives and individuality, this wide array of content is highly engaging and authentic.

Young people today can easily find hosts who reflect their experiences, whether through global discussions or hyper-local stories. Kenyan listeners, for example, turn to podcasts such as The Sandwich Podcast, a Nairobi-based ensemble of creatives exploring contemporary issues, and Legally Clueless, hosted by Adelle Onyango, which shares raw, real-life stories from ordinary Kenyans.

Others gravitate toward The 97s Podcast, a humorous trio tackling everyday life, Mic Cheque Podcast, covering pop culture and current affairs, and So This Is Love, which dives into themes of love and heartbreak. Nipe Story offers intimate personal narratives, giving voice to diverse experiences from across the country.

Humor, insight, and commentary continue with Iko Nini, where hosts dissect a variety of topics with witty banter, and Until Everyone Is Free, a Sheng podcast exploring Kenya’s political history and figures like Pio Gama Pinto.

Broader societal coverage is available through The Kenyan Podcast, which delves into entertainment, sports, business, and trending topics, while Kenyan Girl Chronicles highlights the experiences, challenges, and triumphs of Kenyan women. Faith and personal growth are explored on Ibada Podcast, and practical advice on finance and taxation is offered by Tubonge Tax, simplifying complex topics for everyday Kenyans.

These podcasts offer a rich tapestry of content that resonates with the diverse experiences and interests of young Kenyan listeners.

Together, these podcasts illustrate how audio content has evolved, offering convenience, personalization, and a sense of community that traditional radio struggles to match.

Technology and community

Another critical advantage podcasts hold is greater control over interruptions. Radio relies heavily on frequent commercial breaks, whereas podcasts typically feature fewer advertisements, often offering ad-free premium options.

Even when advertisements are present, they are frequently integrated seamlessly by the host, minimizing disruption.

Technology has played a massive role in enabling this shift. Affordable internet, smartphones, and dedicated platforms like Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Google Podcasts have made subscribing to and discovering new shows effortless.

For many young people, the smartphone has replaced the traditional radio, serving as a unified hub for entertainment, music, and information.

Finally, podcasts cultivate a strong feeling of community that traditional radio’s unidirectional broadcasts rarely match. Listeners actively engage with producers, participate in online debates, and share episodes with peers through social media and live events.

Although podcasts are increasingly popular, radio remains relevant. Many stations are adapting by streaming live online or offering their shows as downloadable episodes, effectively blending the immediacy of radio with the flexibility of digital audio.

Ultimately, the transition from radio to podcasts highlights how younger generations prioritize variety, convenience, and a personalized touch, allowing them to choose the content that matters most, precisely when they want it.

Radio established the foundation, but the intimacy and freedom of podcasts have captured the headphones of a new era of listeners.
