WAJIR, Kenya — Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a stern warning that the desecration of national symbols is a punishable offense. The CS spoke at the 45th Jukwaa La Usalama tour in Wajir, where he addressed viral videos showing unruly fans disrespecting the Kenyan flag after a recent football match.
The incident occurred following a CAF Champions League clash on Saturday 20, September 2025 between Kenya Police FC and Mogadishu City FC, which ended in a 3-1 victory for the Kenyan team. Murkomen emphasized that the National Flag, Emblems and Names Act exists to regulate the use of the country’s national symbols.
He urged law enforcement to take firm action against the perpetrators. “Many people don’t know that there is the National Flag, Emblems and Names Act. I urge the Inspector General of Police to ensure the law takes its course,” he said.
The CS also delivered a direct warning to those who disrespect national symbols, stating, “When you joke with our symbols of national unity and pride, you have overstayed your welcome.”
In response, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja assured the public that the National Police Service is taking the matter seriously. “That matter is extremely serious and I can confirm that the matter is under control,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mogadishu City Club has issued a public apology, condemning the actions of the fans as “unacceptable and contrary to the values of football.”

The club expressed its sincere regret, saying, “On behalf of the Mogadishu City Club, we strongly condemn this act and extend our deepest apologies to the government and people of Kenya. Such behaviour has no place in football or in the spirit of friendship and sportsmanship that this competition represents.”
The club also pledged its full cooperation with the Kenyan authorities. “We fully support any appropriate action by the Kenyan authorities against those involved, and we urge our fans, especially the younger generation, to always respect all nations, their flags, and their people,” the club stated.
It concluded by highlighting the unifying power of sports, adding, “Football is a game of unity, love, and mutual respect, and we call on all supporters to uphold these values and promote peace and harmony in our communities.”
