Moi’s grandson risks jail again over child support case.

NAKURU, Kenya — Collins Kibet, the grandson of former President Daniel Moi, risks a third imprisonment for contempt of court as a new arrest warrant has been issued against him. The court ordered Kibet’s arrest after he failed to appear to explain the steps he had taken to comply with previous orders to provide for his two children.

On August 20, Kibet appeared before the court and expressed his willingness to support the minors, stating he was raising money with the help of friends.

He informed the court that he had managed to collect at least KSh 8,000 but later lost his phone, which contained the contacts of his friends and well-wishers. The court granted him more time to organize himself, requiring him to appear again on Wednesday 27, August 2025 to provide an update on his fundraising efforts.

However, his absence from the court session prompted Ms. Elizabeth Wangare, the lawyer representing his ex-wife Gladys Jeruto Tagi, to request the issuance of an arrest warrant.

Principal Magistrate Kipkurui Kibelion granted the request, stating: “The defendant having not complied with the directions of this court, I hereby issue a warrant of arrest against him.”

This marks the third time the court has ordered Kibet’s arrest for failing to appear in court. The first warrant was issued in March of last year, leading to his arrest and a two-week civil jail term before he was released on a personal bond of KSh 1 million.

He was arrested again in July pursuant to a warrant issued in May after he disappeared, violating his bond conditions.

On July 4, he was sentenced to two weeks in prison at the Nakuru GK Prisons but was later released to facilitate his children’s education and medical care.

The court had directed him to ensure one of his children was admitted to Kabarak Group of Schools and to continue paying school fees for the other child at their current institution.

Prof. Henry Kiplagat, the Vice-Chancellor and University Trust Secretary of Kabarak University, appeared in court to confirm the institution’s willingness to admit the child.

He submitted the application forms to the court, which directed Kibet to personally complete and submit them.

Kibet was first taken to court in 2021 by his former wife, Ms. Tagi, who accused him of neglecting his parental responsibilities.
