Tanzania's Samia Suluhu offers Tsh 1 billion prize if Taifa Stars win CHAN 2024
Tanzania’s national football team, Taifa Stars, launched their 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign in emphatic style with a commanding 2–0 triumph over Burkina Faso in the opening Group B fixture played at the electrifying Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania — Co-hosts Kenya and Tanzania have both begun their African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 campaigns with crucial victories, a feat that has been met with both on-field success and substantial financial pledges from their respective heads of state.

These presidential commitments appear to be a key motivator, transforming the tournament into a mission for national pride and life-changing rewards.

In Tanzania, the Taifa Stars officially began their quest for the Tsh 1 billion (Ksh 51 million) prize promised by President Samia Suluhu Hassan if they win the CHAN 2024 trophy.

Taifa Stars head coach Hemed Morocco affirmed the impact of the pledge, stating: “This is not just a tournament, it’s an opportunity to make history. Mama Samia’s promise has lifted every player’s spirit. They feel the weight of representing their country and now have even greater motivation to give their all.”

The team responded to this support with a commanding 2-0 victory over Burkina Faso in the opening match, with goals from Abdul Suleiman “Sopu” and Mohamed Hussein “Tshabalala” placing them at the top of Group B.

Tanzania triumphs in CHAN opener with 2-0 victory over Burkina Faso
Tanzania kicked off their TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024 campaign in style with a commanding 2-0 victory over Burkina Faso in Dar es Salaam on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, in Kenya, the Harambee Stars secured a momentous 1-0 victory against two-time champions DR Congo in their CHAN debut.

The win was sealed by a decisive goal from Gor Mahia midfielder Austin Odhiambo just before halftime.

This victory also guaranteed every player a KSh 1 million bonus, part of a reward package pledged by President William Ruto.

“For every game you win, each player will get KSh 1 million. For a draw, it will be half a million. If you reach the final, the team will get KSh 600 million,” President Ruto had said.

However, Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy clarified that while the incentives were a factor, his team’s primary focus remained on performance. “For me, it is all about winning football matches. When you win, you get greatly rewarded.”

Still, McCarthy described the incentives as “life-changing,” noting their importance for players who are not on large salaries.

“The squad has local-based players and they do not have the best of the biggest salaries. When you look at it that way, it is a morale booster.”

This national movement, driven by direct presidential support, has set the tone for both co-hosts as they pursue victory in the tournament.
