Nairobi, Kenya — Safaricom, Kenya’s leading telecommunications provider, has announced a significant achievement: surpassing 50 million customers on its mobile network in Kenya. This major milestone comes just months before the company’s 25th anniversary in October 2025.

The telecommunications giant attributed this remarkable growth to intensified customer engagement initiatives launched over the past year. These include popular campaigns such as “Sambaza Furaha” and the innovative M-PESA Sokoni marketplace.

“This milestone reflects the deep connection we have built with Kenyans over the past two and a half decades,” stated Group CEO Peter Ndegwa in a press statement released on Thursday. He added, “We recommit ourselves to always being a force for good and creating what’s next for our customers.”

Established in 2000 with a modest base of just 17,000 customers, Safaricom has grown exponentially to become the dominant telecommunications provider in the country.

Beyond its domestic success, the company has also been actively expanding its regional footprint, recently achieving 10 million customers in Ethiopia, a market it entered in 2022.

Over its history, Safaricom has consistently invested in robust digital infrastructure and introduced groundbreaking innovations.

Chief among these is M-PESA, which has evolved into a comprehensive digital financial ecosystem.

The company has also been instrumental in expanding internet connectivity across Kenya through its continuous development of 3G, 4G, and increasingly, 5G networks.
