NITA-U launches free public Wi-Fi in Bwera town to bridge Uganda’s digital access
Ugandab government has officially launched Free Public Wi-Fi in Bwera Town, aimed at boosting access for citizens, schools, health centres, and local government offices.

BWERA, Uganda — The Ugandan government, through the National Information Technology Authority – Uganda (NITA-U), has successfully launched Free Public Wi-Fi in Bwera Town. This achievement marks a significant step in the nation’s ongoing efforts to expand digital access to communities throughout Uganda.

The launch event gathered prominent government officials, local leaders, technical partners, and residents, all celebrating a pivotal moment in Uganda’s digital acceleration journey.

Bwera Town was chosen as one of the initial pilot sites following a recent NITA-U study on public Wi-Fi connectivity. This initiative aims to bolster last-mile connectivity and enhance access to digital public services.

The newly installed infrastructure features secure, high-speed broadband access points strategically placed along Mpondwe Road, designed to benefit citizens, schools, health centers, and local government offices.

Officiating the launch, the Minister of State for ICT and National Guidance (National Guidance), Hon. Godfrey Baluku Kiime Kabbyanga, emphasized the critical importance of community-level connectivity: “This intervention is more than just internet access but about empowering people. When we bring connectivity to the grassroots, we equip citizens with tools to learn, earn, and engage with government services more easily. That is true transformation.”

Hon. Godfrey Baluku Kiime Kabbyanga.

In his address, Dr. Hatwib Mugasa, Executive Director of NITA-U, affirmed: “The launch of public Wi-Fi in Bwera demonstrates our firm commitment to building a digitally inclusive Uganda. Every citizen deserves access to affordable and reliable internet; this is the foundation for innovation, efficiency, and service delivery across all sectors.”

This endeavor is part of the larger Uganda Digital Acceleration Project (UDAP–GovNet), which seeks to bridge Uganda’s digital divide and ensure equitable access to digital infrastructure and services nationwide.

The Bwera launch is just the beginning of this extensive project. As UDAP–GovNet continues its rollout across Uganda, NITA-U remains dedicated to providing meaningful, inclusive connectivity that transforms lives, supports public service delivery, and propels Uganda toward a thriving digital economy.
