KAMPALA, Uganda — The Uganda Rugby Union (URU) has expressed strong confidence in its preparations to host a successful Rugby Africa Cup 2025.
The prestigious tournament, which also serves as a qualifier for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, is scheduled to take place from July 8-9 at the iconic Nelson Mandela National Stadium in Kampala, Uganda’s capital.
Godwin Kayangwe, President of the URU, informed Vivid Voice News on Saturday that the Union is working tirelessly to ensure the competition’s seamless execution.
“This is also a World Cup qualifier event and we need to make sure it is well organized and our team also performs well,” Kayangwe emphasized, highlighting the dual importance of the event.
The tournament is anticipated to attract national teams from across the continent, including Algeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Kenya, Namibia, Senegal, the host nation Uganda, Zimbabwe, and Morocco.
Uganda is set to commence its campaign with a highly anticipated match against arch-rival Kenya, a fixture that promises to be a thrilling encounter for fans.
Fred Mudoola, head coach of the Uganda Rugby Cranes, reiterated the team’s commitment to excellence. He made it clear that the squad is putting in significant effort to not only win the Rugby Africa Cup 2025 but also secure direct qualification for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
“We know that the Rugby Africa Cup will not be an easy task. But we are determined to put in a lot of work so that we win the Cup and gain direct qualification into the World Cup 2027,” the coach stated, outlining their ambitious goals.
The runner-up of the tournament will proceed to an Asia/Africa play-off for a chance to qualify.
