EU lifts economic sanctions on Syria to aid post-Assad transition
EU's move aims to support Syria's transition and recovery.

The European Union has announced the lifting of several economic sanctions on Syria, effective Wednesday, in a bid to bolster the nation’s transition and recovery efforts following the removal of former President Bashar al-Assad.

This decision follows a political consensus achieved last week among EU foreign ministers to ease the existing sanctions regime.

According to the Council, the EU will maintain sanctions targeting Assad’s former government and security-related restrictions.

Simultaneously, it will implement new sanctions against individuals and entities implicated in the surge of violence witnessed in March.

“The Council will continue monitoring developments on the ground and stands ready to introduce further restrictive measures against human rights violators and those fueling instability in Syria,” the Council stated.
