15 Kenyans evacuated from Iran as government steps up diaspora safety efforts

NAIROBI, Kenya — Fifteen Kenyan nationals stranded in Iran amid escalating regional tensions have safely returned home, in the latest evacuation effort by the government to protect citizens abroad.

The group arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Sunday morning, March 22, 2026, following a coordinated operation that saw them transit through Türkiye.

Their evacuation comes against the backdrop of heightened security concerns in Iran, where tensions linked to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East have raised risks for foreign nationals.

Upon arrival in Nairobi, the returnees were received by officials from Kenya’s State Department for Diaspora Affairs, led by Peter Burugu on behalf of Principal Secretary Roseline Njogu.

Authorities said the evacuees underwent a structured debriefing process and were offered immediate psychosocial support to help them recover from the distressing conditions experienced while in the conflict-affected region.

Many appeared visibly relieved after days of uncertainty, with some reportedly having remained indoors for extended periods due to safety concerns.

The evacuation underscores Kenya’s increasing focus on safeguarding its citizens living and working abroad, particularly in regions experiencing instability. The operation was carried out in coordination with Kenyan diplomatic missions in Tehran and Ankara.

Officials say such interventions are part of a broader government strategy to respond swiftly to emerging global crises affecting Kenyans overseas.

The Middle East has in recent months witnessed renewed geopolitical strain, with sporadic escalations contributing to an unpredictable security environment in several countries, including Iran.

Analysts note that governments worldwide have stepped up contingency planning for their nationals in the region, amid fears that localized conflicts could have wider implications.

Kenyan authorities have urged citizens abroad to remain vigilant and maintain regular contact with embassies and consulates for updates and assistance.

The government reiterated its commitment to closely monitoring global developments and ensuring timely intervention where the safety of its nationals is at risk.
