KISUMU, Kenya — A somber atmosphere has engulfed several regions across the country following a string of fatal incidents on New Year’s Day, ranging from domestic animal attacks and violent altercations to a devastating toll on Kenyan roads.
In East Kano’s Olasi village, a two-year-old boy lost his life on January 1, 2026, following a freak accident involving a donkey. According to police reports, the child was at his grandfather’s homestead when he walked near the animal.
The donkey reportedly kicked the minor, inflicting severe injuries to his chest. The boy tragically passed away while being rushed to a local medical facility.
After the hospital confirmed the death, the family returned the body home to begin funeral rites.
Law enforcement officers have since assisted in transferring the remains to a mortuary as they conclude their preliminary investigations.
Violence also claimed lives in the Nyanza region. In Yala, Siaya County, a 38-year-old Ugandan national, John Ingunze, died after a dispute at Anyiko Market.
Investigators state that Ingunze and another man were engaged in a heated argument over a woman when the suspect struck Ingunze on the head with a piece of wood.
Ingunze succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital. While the assailant remains at large, police are actively pursuing leads.
Meanwhile, in Ekerenyo, Nyamira County, 41-year-old Victor Osoro was found dead on a footpath.
Authorities report that Osoro was a victim of mob justice after being accused of theft. Police have opened an inquiry into the circumstances of the attack and are awaiting an autopsy report.
New Year’s road carnage: 16 dead
Beyond localized violence, the national road network saw a significant spike in fatalities. On New Year’s Day alone, 16 people were killed in various traffic accidents across the country.

The casualty breakdown includes:
- 8 pedestrians
- 6 motorcyclists
- 1 passenger
- 1 pillion rider
In addition to the lives lost, 33 individuals, including riders and passenger, sustained serious injuries and remain hospitalized.
Traffic authorities have reiterated their commitment to enhancing road safety measures to curb these recurring tragedies.
