KAMPALA, Uganda — Uganda’s music industry has been plunged into grief following the death of the mother of celebrated rapper Fik Fameica, one of the country’s most influential artists.

The 29-year-old musician, born Shafik Walukagga, is mourning the loss after his mother succumbed to a prolonged illness on Saturday at Kibuli Muslim Hospital, where she had been receiving medical care for several weeks as her health deteriorated.

Close friends and associates of the family described the last days as emotionally intense, with the rapper remaining by his mother’s side. In the days before her passing, Fik Fameica had reached out to his audience online, requesting prayers for her recovery, a message that now resonates as a poignant farewell.

“This is one of the hardest moments of his life,” said a family associate. “His mother wasn’t just family — she was his backbone. She believed in him before the fame, before the money, before the applause.”

Fik Fameica’s rise from Kampala’s Kawempe neighborhood to national and regional stardom has often been linked to his mother’s unwavering support.

Fik Fameica, also known as Fresh Bwoy or King Kong, is a Ugandan rapper and songwriter. He is popularly known for showcasing his versatality in different genres including Hip-Hop, Afrobeats, Afropop and dancehall.

She was a familiar presence at his concerts and career milestones, frequently seen celebrating his achievements away from the media spotlight.

Renowned for hits including Pistol, Salawo and Batuwulira, Fik Fameica has become a household name in Ugandan and East African music since his debut in 2015.

His versatility across hip-hop, Afrobeats and dancehall has earned him multiple awards and collaborations with regional artists, and helped position him as one of the most booked performers in Uganda’s entertainment scene.

Fellow musicians and fans have taken to social media to pay tribute to the late matriarch, describing her as a pillar of strength who raised an artist who has profoundly shaped the contemporary Ugandan music landscape.

“This is bigger than music,” one fan posted. “It’s about a son losing the person who gave him strength.”

At the time of publication, Fik Fameica had not issued a personal statement, though close sources say he is deeply affected and surrounded by family. Plans for funeral arrangements are expected to be shared by the family soon.

As the entertainment community rallies around him, his personal loss highlights the deep familial bonds that often underlie public success, a reminder that behind the accolades and stage lights are stories of love, sacrifice, and grief.
