JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — A wave of violence continues to grip South Africa after unknown gunmen launched a lethal assault in a township southwest of Johannesburg, leaving 10 people dead and 10 others wounded. The massacre, which occurred in Bekkersdal, marks the second mass shooting to rock the nation this month.
The attack took place late Saturday in an impoverished area situated approximately 40 kilometers from the city, known for its proximity to major gold mining operations.
According to authorities, the violence unfolded near a tavern, a common focal point in South African townships, though the specific motive behind the slaughter remains a mystery.
In a formal statement, law enforcement described a scene of chaotic and indiscriminate violence.
“Some victims were randomly shot in the streets by unknown gunmen,” a police statement said.
The scale of the tragedy was confirmed on Sunday by Brigadier Brenda Muridili, the police spokesperson for Gauteng province, who noted that the identification process for the deceased is still underway.
“Ten people are dead. We don’t have a breakdown of who they are,” Muridili told Vivid Voice News.
The survivors of the onslaught were rushed to nearby hospitals, where they are currently receiving treatment for various gunshot wounds.

This latest incident follows a similar tragedy on December 6, when gunmen stormed a hostel near Pretoria. That attack claimed 12 lives, including a three-year-old child, at a location police identified as an unauthorized alcohol outlet.
South Africa continues to struggle with a staggering crime wave. With a population of 63 million, the country consistently records some of the highest murder rates globally, putting immense pressure on security forces to contain the escalating gun violence in informal settlements.
