BUGIRI, Uganda — At least ten people have died and three others are in hospital after a tragic road accident at Busowa Town Council, Bugiri District, early Wednesday morning.
The crash occurred at around 7:00 a.m. along the Busia Highway and involved a Toyota Hiace taxi (registration UBN 817H) and a stationary trailer (registration UA 647BA/UA 430AA).
According to the Traffic and Road Safety Directorate, the taxi driver attempted to overtake another vehicle when a vehicle from the opposite direction appeared suddenly. To avoid a head-on collision, the driver “swerved to the left, lost control, and rammed into a stationary trailer.”
The driver of the taxi was among those killed, police confirmed. Emergency responders transported the injured to a nearby hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to a hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash. Meanwhile, the Traffic and Road Safety Directorate has again warned motorists against reckless driving behaviours such as speeding, unsafe overtaking, and failing to maintain a safe distance, practices that continue to cause fatal accidents across the country.
This latest tragedy adds to growing concerns over increasing road fatalities, especially on major highways, at a time when traffic volumes are rising as the festive season approaches.
