NYAMIRA COUNTY, Kenya — Nyamira County Governor Amos Kimwomi Nyaribo has been impeached by the County Assembly following a successful motion citing allegations of abuse of office and violations of legal procedure.

During the session, twenty-three of the thirty-one Members of County Assembly (MCAs) present voted in favour of the motion to remove the Governor.

Four additional MCAs had reportedly written to the Speaker requesting to be included in the vote.

Allegations of unauthorised governance

The motion, tabled by Bonyamatuta Ward representative Julius Kimwomi Matwere, centred on Governor Nyaribo’s alleged conduct of county business through unauthorized forums, particularly the use of informal “Bunge Mashinani” (grassroots parliamentary) sessions, which are not legally recognized under county assembly standing orders.

The key accusations underpinning the impeachment include:

  • Unlawful Appointment of County Minister: The Governor was criticized for allegedly approving and utilizing the county budget to endorse Peris Nyaboke-Oroko as the County Agriculture Minister. This process was reportedly conducted outside legal protocols during a period of disputed leadership within the assembly.
  • Irregular Committee and Board Appointments: Further allegations focused on the irregular appointment of committee members for Keroka town. Additionally, the motion cited the unlawful establishment and approval of a Public Service Board appointment panel, both processes facilitated through the same informal assembly sessions that operated between October 2024 and June 2025.

Governor Nyaribo’s removal now sets the stage for proceedings at the Senate, where the charges will be heard and investigated to determine whether the impeachment is upheld.
