Spectacular rare Supermoon set to light up Kenyan skies on October 7
The word supermoon was first used in 1979 by astrologer Richard Nolle in an article in Dell Horoscope. It describes a full moon that is physically closer to Earth than it usually is, something that’s known as perigee, according to NASA. When the moon reaches this point, it appears about 14% larger and 30% brighter.

NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenyans are set to witness a breathtaking celestial event on Tuesday morning, October 7, 2025, as a brilliant Supermoon illuminates the pre-dawn sky, appearing notably larger and brighter than a typical full moon.

The moon officially reaches its full phase around 6:47 a.m. East Africa Time (EAT), but the most spectacular viewing window will occur just before sunrise.

For skywatchers in Nairobi, the moon is projected to set around 5:25 a.m., offering the best views just before the break of dawn.

Understanding the Supermoon

A Supermoon occurs when the Full Moon phase precisely coincides with perigee, the point in the moon’s elliptical orbit where it is closest to Earth. This proximity makes the moon appear both larger and significantly brighter to observers on the ground.

Anticipation for the event is already building on social media platforms: “Hunter’s Moon, The First Supermoon of 2025. Date: October 7, 2025. Get ready for a magical night sky! This year’s first Supermoon will rise as the traditional Hunter’s Moon,” reads a post on Facebook.

The celestial body is traditionally referred to as the Hunter’s Moon because its appearance historically coincided with the time when tribes in the Great Americas would gather meat in preparation for the upcoming winter.

The event serves as a striking reminder of the natural splendor that unfolds silently above our daily routines.

Kenyans are encouraged to set their alarms early and take a moment to appreciate this dazzling phenomenon.
