KAMPALA, Uganda — Makindye East Member of Parliament (MP), Derrick Nyeko, has issued a statement following his failure to secure the National Unity Platform (NUP) party flag for a second term in the 2026 parliamentary elections.

Addressing his team, supporters, and family, the incumbent lawmaker urged for restraint and unity, emphasizing that the foundation of his political involvement has always rested on core values rather than individual ambition.

Nyeko stressed, “Our strength has never been only in victory, but in the spirit of resilience, loyalty, and commitment to the cause we believe in.”

He affirmed that the core principles of the political struggle—integrity, justice, and service to the populace—remain non-negotiable, despite the setback in the party primaries.

Nyeko, who previously served a single term on the NUP ticket, had initially declared he would not contest for re-election. However, he subsequently rescinded that decision and presented himself to the party’s Elections Management Committee (EMC) for vetting. The committee ultimately awarded the party’s flag to Makindye Division Mayor, Ali Mulyanyama.

Ali Kasirye Nganda Mulyanyama the Mayor of Makindye Division.

In his concession message, Nyeko cautioned his support base against allowing the outcome to foster internal divisions that could weaken the wider political movement.

“The enemy will rejoice if they see division among us, but we shall not give them that satisfaction. Our bond is stronger than any setback,” he stated.

He concluded his remarks with an expression of gratitude and reiterated his long-standing motto: “No corruption, No problems.” Nyeko rallied his supporters to continue advancing the dream and the cause he has passionately championed since his entry into Parliament.

The NUP’s recent internal primaries have ignited considerable debate, as several sitting Members of Parliament (MPs) lost their party flags to new aspirants.

This trend highlights both a shifting landscape of popularity within constituencies and the party’s efforts to balance various interests in preparation for the 2026 General Elections.
