Uganda's dream run ends as Senegal advances to CHAN 2024 semifinals

KAMPALA, Uganda — The Uganda Cranes’ fairytale run at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) came to an end after a narrow 1-0 defeat to defending champions Senegal at the Mandela National Stadium.

Oumar Ba scored the decisive goal for Senegal in the 61st minute, finishing a well-executed move orchestrated by Libasse Guèye.

Despite dominating possession and creating several half-chances, Uganda was unable to break through Senegal’s resilient defense.

The result concluded Uganda’s best-ever performance in the tournament, as the Cranes reached the quarterfinal stage for the first time in their history.

Uganda controlled the match with 56.7% possession compared to Senegal’s 42.5%, but they struggled to convert their control into goals.

Known for their defensive discipline and physicality, Senegal absorbed wave after wave of Ugandan pressure, frustrating the home side.

In an effort to find an equalizer, Coach Morley Byekwaso made bold substitutions, bringing on fresh attacking players. Joel Sserunjogi, returning from suspension, tried to spark creativity in the midfield, while the forwards pressed desperately.

However, Senegal’s backline remained unyielding, repelling every attack until the final whistle.

The victory confirmed Senegal’s progression to the semifinals, where they will face Morocco. In the other semifinal bracket, Madagascar awaits the winner of the match between Sudan and Algeria.

For Uganda, the elimination did not dampen the pride of their fans.

The Cranes not only carried East Africa’s flag after the exits of Tanzania and Kenya but also showcased resilience and growth that suggest a promising future on the continental stage.

Allan Okello was a standout performer for Uganda, finishing the tournament as the team’s top scorer with three goals.
