25 people killed after school bus ferrying mourners rolls in Kisumu
A school bus which was ferrying mourners from Nyahera to Nyakach was trying to negotiate a corner at the Coptic blackspot when it rolled.

KISUMU, Kenya — The death toll from a tragic bus crash on the Kisumu-Kakamega road has risen to 25, authorities have confirmed. The school bus, which was ferrying mourners, overturned at the Coptic blackspot on Friday evening, leaving dozens injured.

Health Principal Secretary Dr. Ouma Olunga announced the updated casualty figures, stating that 21 victims died at the scene of the accident, while four others succumbed to their injuries shortly after being admitted to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.

“We have mobilized all health workers on duty and alerted additional personnel to ensure the injured get the best possible care,” Dr Olunga said.

The bus was reportedly traveling from Nyahera to Nyakach when it lost control and rolled at a corner.

A total of 28 survivors, including a child, are currently admitted at the hospital, receiving treatment for their injuries. Dr. Olunga also announced an urgent blood donation drive, scheduled to begin on Saturday, to support the injured.

The crash, which involved a bus belonging to AIC Naki High School, has prompted a multi-agency response.

Authorities from the DCI and Nyanza Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer Peter Maina were at the scene, with the deceased’s bodies being moved to the hospital’s morgue.

A blood drive will commence at 9:00 AM on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at Leresian Park within JOOTRH.

“We are also working closely with the county government and surrounding hospitals to respond to this tragedy. Blood donation drives are already underway to meet the needs of those who lost blood.”
