NAIROBI, Kenya — The Ministry of Education has officially announced a reduction in fees payable for all academic programs across Kenyan universities.

According to a memo issued by Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, the Principal Secretary for Higher Education, this decision was made following extensive consultations with students, the public, and various stakeholders in the education sector.

“In direct response to concerns raised by students and their families, the Government has lowered fees payable by students across all academic programmes,” reads the memo, addressed to Vice Chancellors of public universities and Principals of constituent colleges.

The PS stated that this rationalization aims to ensure “affordable, accessible and quality university education,” and will also contribute to maintaining the financial sustainability of higher learning institutions.

Universities are expected to adopt the new fee schedules starting September 1, 2025. This revised structure will apply to both incoming first-year students and continuing students.

“All public universities are further directed to update their admissions and finance portals to reflect the revised fees of academic programmes,” the Education PS instructed.

Students will continue to cover the cost of their programs through a combination of tuition fees, scholarships, and loans, determined by the individual needs of each student.
