KAMPALA, Uganda — Captain Michael Mukula officially launched his campaign for National Vice Chairman of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) for the Eastern Region on Monday. Speaking from his Mutungo offices in Kampala, Capt. Mukula issued a strong caution to NRM leaders against engaging in monetary politics during the upcoming campaigns.
Capt. Mukula emphasized that the monetization of politics poses a significant threat to any nation, fundamentally undermining democratic principles. He warned that if political processes become driven by money, the NRM risks transforming into a party dominated by those with financial influence, where individuals can effectively buy their way into power by purchasing votes and ballot papers.
“We must stop monetising elections,” Capt. Mukula urged NRM leaders. “If we continue down this path, we’ll negotiate our way out of power, and the party will become one of those who can afford to buy their way in. This is a recipe for disaster. Not even established parties like the Republicans or Democrats in the US, or major parties in China, would dare to compromise their integrity like this.”
Capt. Mukula asserted that the position of NRM Vice Chairperson demands seasoned and experienced leaders due to its sensitive nature and crucial role within the party’s central executive committee.
Furthermore, Capt. Mukula alleged that Uganda’s political landscape has been infiltrated by Western powers. He claimed these foreign entities are funding and promoting numerous candidates within both the opposition and the NRM, often driven by unknown and self-serving interests that, he argued, must be resisted. He highlighted that some of these candidates lack a local presence, having never held public office or established a grassroots base.

Capt. Mukula stated that his candidacy for NRM Vice Chairperson for Eastern Uganda is rooted in his merit as a patriotic Ugandan. He underscored his past contributions to restoring peace in the country, shaping democratic policies, and demonstrating unwavering resolve through various challenges, all of which, he believes, qualify him for the role.
The election for the NRM Vice Chairperson position will involve a broad base of delegates, including NRM LC3 chairpersons, district councilors, district executive committee members, NRM flag bearers, and representatives from various party leagues such as youth, women, and workers. The election is slated for August 22nd at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.
Capt. Mukula’s current rivals in the race include 39-year-old Daniel Ikwap and businessman Calvin Ecodu.
