KAMPALA, Uganda — Ugandan singer Azawi has agreed to a public debate proposed by fellow artist Eddy Kenzo, the development following a recent exchange of opinions regarding the government and the music industry.

Eddy Kenzo had previously voiced his desire for a dialogue with Azawi, alleging that she had made prejudiced and inaccurate statements concerning the condition of Uganda’s music scene and its relationship with political entities. His comments were a response to Azawi’s forthright perspectives, which have generated considerable discussion within the entertainment fraternity.

During an interview on Galaxy FM, Azawi embraced the prospect of a debate, expressing her satisfaction that Kenzo had framed it as a public forum. “He asked for a public debate and I accept the debate,” Azawi stated. “What makes me happy in all this is that he called it a public debate, so I’m requesting the organisers to take us to the ghettos, where both of us started our journeys.”

She proposed that the debate be held in either Nankulabye or Kasubi, communities recognized for their foundational influence on Ugandan music and symbolic of both artists’ origins.

According to Azawi, such a setting would ensure that the discussion remains rooted in the lived experiences of the people they both aim to represent.

“I want people present because me and him, that’s our genesis—the people and the ghettos,” she emphasized. “I have my questions and he has his. I want him to tell me where he feels I’m misinforming the youths.”
