CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES — Rapper Tory Lanez has been hospitalized after reportedly being stabbed 14 times at a California correctional facility.
The Canadian hip-hop artist, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, was allegedly attacked by another inmate on Tuesday morning within a housing unit at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, approximately 75 miles north of Los Angeles, according to prison officials who spoke to this publication.
A post on Lanez’s Instagram account stated that the 32-year-old sustained wounds across his body, leading to the collapse of both lungs. The post further indicated that he was temporarily placed on a breathing apparatus but is now breathing independently.
“Despite being in pain, he is talking normally, in good spirits, and deeply thankful to God that he is pulling through,” the Instagram post read.
Pedro Calderón Michel of the state’s corrections department confirmed that the incident occurred around 07:20 local time (15:20 GMT). He stated that prison staff administered initial first aid before Lanez was transferred to a local medical facility for further treatment.
Mr. Calderón Michel informed Vivid Voice News that an investigation into the stabbing is currently underway. He did not comment on the alleged attacker’s motive.
Lanez is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence, handed down in 2023, for three felony gun-related charges, including assault with a semi-automatic firearm.
His conviction stemmed from the 2020 shooting of fellow musician Megan Thee Stallion, whose legal name is Megan Pete. The incident occurred as they were leaving a pool party at reality star Kylie Jenner’s Hollywood mansion.
During the trial, Megan Thee Stallion testified that the pair argued inside a vehicle about their past sexual relationship and careers. She stated that she demanded to exit the vehicle, at which point Lanez began firing shots at the ground and instructed her to “dance.” She underwent surgery to remove bullet fragments from her foot.
Lanez maintained his innocence and did not apologize for the shooting. The case sparked division within the hip-hop community, with several rappers expressing support for either side. Some even wrote to the court requesting leniency in Lanez’s sentencing.
Prior to his conviction, Lanez had achieved seven US top 10 albums within a seven-year period. He has also teased the upcoming release of a new album from prison titled “Peterson.”
