KAMPALA, UGANDA — Members of Parliament (MPs) in Uganda are facing accusations of switching off their mobile phones in the aftermath of reportedly receiving Shs100 million each on Monday night.
Constituents have reported an inability to contact their elected representatives since the news of the payment emerged, with some MPs allegedly providing misleading information regarding their whereabouts.
“I tried calling my MP, but their phone is off,” one disillusioned voter stated. “We were surprised to see him in Parliament on Thursday, despite claiming to be out of the country.”
Another voter from Western Uganda disclosed that their MP acknowledged receiving the Shs100 million but is now reportedly overwhelmed by requests from constituents seeking a portion of the funds.
Consequently, some MPs have resorted to either turning off their phones or ignoring calls from voters.
One Member of Parliament, speaking on condition of anonymity, admitted to feeling besieged by calls from constituents requesting a share of the Shs100 million.
The Shs100 million payout to MPs has ignited significant public controversy, with widespread questions being raised about the legitimacy and origin of the funds.
Adding to the controversy, legislators have reportedly been targeted by moneylenders, who have assertively claimed portions of the received payments.
The situation has also amplified concerns regarding accountability and transparency in the utilization of public funds.
The opposition has strongly condemned the government for the alleged misappropriation of taxpayer money. However, the government has yet to issue an official response to these allegations.
The situation remains under intense public scrutiny, with numerous Ugandans demanding clarification on the Shs100 million payout to their parliamentary representatives.
As the circumstances surrounding the payment continue to be investigated, voters are left questioning the conduct of their representatives and the future processes for allocating public funds.
