KAMPALA, UGANDA — Ugandan music icon Joseph Mayanja, widely celebrated as Jose Chameleone, is preparing to return to his homeland following an extended period of medical treatment overseas.

In anticipation of his homecoming, fellow artist Ray G has launched a nationwide fundraising campaign with the ambitious goal of collecting Shs1 billion to support the legendary singer.

Spearheaded by Ray G, the initiative encourages fans across Uganda to contribute Shs10,000 each, aiming to mobilize at least 100,000 supporters.

The funds raised are intended as a gesture of profound appreciation for Jose Chameleone’s significant and enduring contributions to the Ugandan music industry throughout his illustrious career.

“The Ugandan music industry thrives today because he sparked the fire. He carries the Uganda flag on every stage. He is coming home soon. Let’s give back to him with overwhelming love by raising Shs1 billion for Jose Chameleone,” Ray G announced in a heartfelt post on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

To facilitate the fundraising efforts, Ray G revealed that discussions are underway with major telecommunication companies MTN Uganda and Airtel Uganda to provide dedicated mobile money codes for seamless and secure contributions from fans.

“It takes just Shs10,000 from 100,000 fans to raise 1 billion for Chameleone. MTN Uganda and Airtel Uganda, all we ask is that you provide codes to make this possible. A legend is coming back home,” Ray G added.

Jose Chameleone, a prominent musical export from East Africa, is widely recognized as a pivotal figure who laid the groundwork for the contemporary Ugandan music landscape.

The singer sought medical treatment in the United States last year after spending several weeks in a Kampala hospital due to an undisclosed illness, which his estranged son Abba Marcus had linked to substance abuse.

His impending return is expected to generate considerable excitement throughout Uganda, with fans eagerly anticipating new musical releases, live performances, and heartfelt reunions with the beloved artist.

This fundraising campaign not only underscores Jose Chameleone’s enduring legacy within the Ugandan music scene but also highlights the strong and supportive relationship between Ugandan artists and their dedicated fanbase.
